As well as regular episodes which are part of an ongoing campaign, Dragon Friends has produced many special episodes. These are often performed live as part of festivals and other big events, or streamed live on Twitch. Some are sponsored, mostly by the current makers of Dungeons & Dragons, Wizards of the Coast. We’ve also included below special livestreams and actual plays which feature Dragon Friends cast members, even though they’re not Dragon Friends shows.
Most specials are “one-shots” - short adventures which only last a single session (though they may be presented in two parts). They are often an excuse to play with another game system and/or universe, with the players as new characters. Some feature the familiar characters (usually the Dragon Friends themselves) in a side quest which may or may not be considered canonical. Other specials are short or mini-seasons.
One-Shot Specials
Usually split into two parts, as discussed above.
- PAX Australia 2015 - featuring special guest Senator (at the time) Scott Ludlum, this is the one where they ended by putting a bad of holding into another bag of holding, all while knowledgeable audience members shouted not to, and were all sucked into the resulting tear in the space/time continuum.
- Star Wars Special - Patreon exclusive
- PAX Australia 2016
- 2017 Melbourne Special - a non-canonical adventure in which the Dragon Friends establish a detective agency (no, not that one).
- That's all Hocus Pocus - a Patreon exclusive
- Season 5 began with two one-shot special episodes: The End of the World RPG in which the players play versions of themselves; and the Hogwarts Adventures RPG, set in the world of that boy wizard we were all happier to endorse in 2019.
- PAX Australia 2019
- SXSW Sydney 2023 - Patreon exclusive
Mini-Seasons
- D&D Live 2019
- Stranger Things miniseason (sponsored content on twitch.tv/dnd)
- OK Computer: a standalone short season recorded between Seasons 8 and 9, for podcast release in the first half of 2023.
- Romeow & Gilliet: an 8-part series DM'd by Edan Lacey between Seasons 9 and 10.
Christmas Specials
These are more-or-less part of Dragon Friends continuity, though it’s not always clear when they fit into the Draggos’ timeline. Since there’s no Christmas in Faerun, each of these specials sees the Dragon Friends celebrating the suspiciously similar festival of “Yulemas”. They're generally DM’d by Simon and Edan, with Dave playing Freezo’s estranged cousin, Froyo. Like a regular season episode they’re usually recorded as a single live show and released in two parts.
- A Very Dragon Chrisfriends (Season 2 Yulemas special, 2016)
- A Merry Very Yulemas (Season 3 Yulemas special, 2017)
- A Yulemas Very Merry (Season 4 Yulemas special, 2018)
- Freezen - A Dragon Friends Christmas Musical (Season 6 Yulemas special, 2020)
- A Merry Yulemas Very (Season 7 Yulemas special, 2021)
Let's Plays
These are sponsored play-throughs of official Dungeons & Dragons-themed board games.
- Betrayal at Baldur's Gate - a D&D adaptation of the classic Betrayal at the House on the Hill'’ board game, which features a “hidden traitor” mechanic.
- Tomb of Annihilation Board Game - one of a series of “D&D Adventure System” board games which give a dungeon crawling adventure feel without the need for a Dungeon Master
Other Streams and Shows
- The Descent, Part 1 : not technically a Dragon Friends stream, but does feature Alex Lee playing Philge.
- From The Beggars Court: a crossover adventure with the Viva La Dirt League's Epic NPC Man, hosted on the official WoTC channel. Set after season 1, DM'ed by Dave. Hing and Alex play Freezo and Philge, whilst Ben plays a goblin bard called Jobson Lugnutt.
