Description

With husbands laid out before them, the Heroes of Yearth stand on the precipice of victory. However, fate works in mysterious ways and our heroes find themselves in the acidic end of trouble.

Synopsis

In the Amphitheatre at the Fatherning, Gary falls into what turns out to be the maw of an enormous worm-like creature. Sunbelt throws a javelin and pins Gary to its many layers of teeth. Inside the worm’s mouth, buried in its flesh, is the Axe of Sands. Sunbelt and Charion both leap into the worm to grab it. Dinner casts ray(mond) of enfeeblement on the worm, and Polly also goes in, trying to use the Blades of Grass to climb along the teeth. Dinner uses a broken grappling hook and a featherfall spell to descend into the worm and try to reach the Axe. But the worm leaps out of the ground and closes its jaws, trapping all of the Heroes inside in darkness.

Sunbelt lights a torch and they can see the closed mouth as the worm continues its journey horizontally. Gary isn’t dead yet; he pulls out the spear and proposes a truce with Sunbelt to make sure one of them makes it out to be a father to their son. Sunbelt ignores his offer and hits him with his axe, but Gary successfully convinces him (and Polly) to spare him and let him come along with the Heroes...but a tooth falls from the ceiling and kills Gary.

Charion asks Sunbelt if he’d mind if he took Gary’s horns, supposedly to make a hat. Polly and Sunbelt thinks this is weird, but decide to allow it to see what happens. Charion saws off the horns and Dinner loots Gary’s body, much to Polly’s dismay. All he finds is Gary’s victory speech. Sunbelt rips out Gary’s bull ring, which is the Minotaur equivalent of dog tags.

At that moment the worm opens its mouth and turns upwards. The Heroes start to fall further back down its gullet, deeper into the worm, and realise the Axe is no longer visible. As they get deeper into the worm they notice a horrible stench. There are gossamer strands across the walls, and they find themselves at the edge of a pool of bilious green sludge. While Polly, Charion and Sunbelt try to get over the pond with a rope, Dinner tries walking across and finds the sludge is dangerously acidic. He also discovers the worm’s flesh isn’t just gross and wet, but also ice cold.

Eventually they all cross, with Sunbelt the last to join the others by skimming across on the corpse of Gary, which dissolves into the acid. On the other side they meet a gnome archaeologist, Professor Sneeveley Chitterbooks. He was with a team looking for the Gritrock Ruins when they were swallowed by the worm. He takes them to his campsite, which is next to an enormous, tightly closed sphincter which bars access to the rest of the worm. He says the rest of his team passed through it, and the Heroes consider how they might do the same…

Themes, tropes and running jokes

  • Everyday Carry - Demi decides that Dinner has a grappling hook in his everyday carry pack, but not just any grappling hook - specifically a slightly broken one that no-one can figure out how to fix, modelled after a real item owned by Dave.
  • Is That a Minotaur Thing? - its revealed that Minotaurs wear bull rings in their noses, and that they’re like dog tags for humans. Sunbelt takes Gary’s ring.
  • Cum Jokes - the players discuss whether making the worm cum will make it open it’s sphincter. Demi says it would do the opposite, revealing (in the post-credits tag) that this was told to her in Zambrero by fellow comedian and nurse, Georgia Carroll. This leads to a longer discussion about what constitutes “the opposite of doing a cum”, with Edan promising the audience will find out the answer in the next episode.

Trivia

  • We’re pretty sure Gary wasn’t the husband who was about to fall into the worm last episode, but there were so many...
