Billed as a new campaign suitable for new listeners, this second season of Heroes of Yearth is titled “Tyranny of Dragons”. It forms a standalone sequel to the first season, set “just over a year” after the events of “Heroes of Yearth”. It’s the twelfth season of the podcast overall.
This campaign has the same main cast, but the roles have changed around: Michael Hing is now Dungeon Master, prompting jokes and commentary about him finally understanding what he put Dave, Edan and Tom through in previous seasons. The party includes Alex, Simon and Demi’s old characters, plus two new ones played by Edan and Tom. Rather than having one dedicated NPC player, the entire cast pitch in to play NPCs when needed. Tom also provides the music, sometimes in character.
Inspiration
This season’s story is based on Tyrrany of Dragons, the first official published campaign for Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition, written by Wolfgang H. Baur and Steve Winter of Kobold Press for Wizards of the Coast. The campaign was originally published in 2014 in two volumes as Hoard of the Dragon Queen and The Rise of Tiamat. It was later revised and re-released in 2019 as a new collected edition under the title Tyranny of Dragons, though the print version was still split into two books (presented in a slipcase).
